Manchester United lost 2-0 to newly-promoted Hull City at the MKM Stadium in their first Premier League game of the campaign.
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes urged his teammates to be more aggressive after the Reds lost 2-0 to Hull City at the MKM Stadium. United were overwhelmed by the newly-promoted side and went behind on 17 minutes. Oli McBurnie forced an excellent stop from Senne Lammens but the rebound fell invitingly for Semi Ajayi to slam the ball home.
With United reeling, Hull added a second. Regan Slater’s free-kick was guided in by Nobel Mendy on his debut. The Reds attempted to rally in the second half. Marcus Rashford was bright and Bryan Mbeumo had a couple of opportunities, but they did not threaten the hosts enough.
Speaking to Premier League Productions post-match, Fernandes slammed United’s performance. “Same mistakes as we did last season every away game,” he said. “We give too much of the ball to them, in the first 20 minutes the goalkeeper had more touches on the ball, too much time.
“We need to press a little bit more, be more aggressive, and set-plays – we need to work on it, to be more aggressive and try not to concede these types of goals. We knew before the game that [set-pieces] would be a big part of their game.
“They played a full pre-season with a back four. They went against us with a back five, also to have some height, also for these moments because they could get a chance from it and defend well from our set-pieces. The most frustrating thing is that we lost the game.”
After the game, Michael Carrick added: “Some was okay, bits to improve on. It was never going to be perfect today but going behind and giving ourselves a lot to do makes it more difficult.
“With a promoted team at home, we can't give them much. We had moments but not that spark to put the chances away. We're bitterly disappointed with the result today but it won't knock us.”
