Man Utd icon Wayne Rooney shares behind-the-scenes admission from his Bruno Fernandes interview link-up

Wayne Rooney has opened up on a key detail from his one-on-one interview with Manchester United and Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes for his podcast.

The 40-year-old Manchester United legend did cross paths with Red Devils star Bruno Fernandes as a player after he left Old Trafford and signed for Derby County.

However, Wayne Rooney was unable to be a teammate of the 31-year-old Portuguese midfielder at the Premier League club during his iconic playing career.

The former United striker has been an active BBC pundit since his time out of management and linked up with Fernandes as part of his recent media duties.

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes appeared on BBC Sport's The Wayne Rooney Show and shared a 40-minute chat with the England and Red Devils icon.

The former Sporting CP midfielder lifted the veil on different moments in his career, including his spell at Old Trafford and past links with a transfer to Saudi Arabia.

Speaking on the latest episode of his podcast, Wayne Rooney was asked about his interview with Fernandes and his experience of being in the interviewer role.

The former Red Devils skipper admitted that he wanted the conversation to flow naturally with Fernandes and he didn't have a “script†for the podcast chat.

“No, it was all right,†he said on The Wayne Rooney Show.

“It's obviously, you don't know how it's going to go here and because I didn't have a script, I didn't have any questions to ask him, so it was purely just go with the flow, really, see what he answers and then ask whatever questions come to me.

“So that's how we had done it.â€

Fernandes has been a key influence for interim head coach Michael Carrick since January and has enjoyed a stunning run of form in the No 10 role for Man Utd.

Rooney thinks that Man Utd's strong position of finishing inside the Premier League top four and Fernandes' form only benefited his podcast chat with the midfielder.

“Yeah, no, exactly,†he added.

“So, he was brilliant; he was brilliant. I filmed something in the afternoon with him as well, which I think will come out, [it] will be good as well.

“So no, he was great. He was in good form and obviously we, United, [are] in a very good position to make the Champions League.

“I think it made it a little bit easier as well.â€

Fernandes has registered an impressive 19 assists and scored eight times as well in 32 matches across all competitions for Man Utd in the 2025-26 campaign so far.
